When we work with the body, we affect much more than tissue. Memories, images, feelings, dreams, altered states of consciousness, relationship dynamics, social processes, and many other dimensions of experience often arise when we touch. Practitioners who include the body in their work frequently see signs of these things, and yet can be unsure about how to (or if it is even appropriate to) include this awareness in their practice.

This unique at-a-distance training will focus on tangible ways to work effectively with these inner phenomena. By developing tools and skills in following body signals, we will increase our ability to recognize, access, and navigate our client's inner experience, while staying true to our own modalities, domains of expertise, and personal styles.

Topics will include:
  • Working with Chronic and Stubborn Symptoms
  • Integrating Hands-on work with Process Work
  • Responding to Emotional Activation
  • Clarifying the Domain of Your Work
  • Cultural and Social Contexts of Body Experience
  • Practical approaches that can be used immediately with clients and patients.
  • The study group's innovative learning format combines live teleconferenced lecture and discussion, case supervision, individual exercises, and optional readings. Using only a regular phone, you will be able to join the course from anywhere you choose--a simple, trouble-free state-of-the-art teleconference bridge allows for lively interaction as well as questions and answers. Between teleconference meetings, optional course activities will include supplementary off-line study, paired or small group telephone meetings for exercises, guided practice, and an optional email discussion group for follow-up discussions, questions, and review with other participants. No computer is needed for participation in the course.

Eligibility: The seminar is intended for practitioners, educators, therapists, and students working with others in a professional setting (such as health care professionals, bodyworkers, somatic therapists, psychotherapists, movement instructors, and others). Others are welcome with instructor permission. Feel free to contact us if you have questions.

Suggested readings: A major source of inspiration will be the work of Drs. Arnold and Amy Mindell (authors of Riding the Horse Backwards; Coma: A Healing Journey, and other titles.)
