🎙 183: Tight Tissue: What Are We Really Feeling?
When tissue feels softer under your hands, what changed—and did it help?
A client says their neck is tight. You find something firm, work on it, and feel it soften. They feel better. It’s a familiar sequence—and an easy one to turn into an explanation: the tissue was tight, you loosened it, and that’s why the pain changed. But what the client feels, what your hands notice, and what actually changed may tell different parts of the story.
Whitney and Til explore muscle activity, fascial hydration, practitioner expectations, and research linking tissue qualities with pain. They consider when stiffness may be useful, how to describe what you feel without making it sound like a problem, and why even temporary changes can offer something worth building on. The conversation returns to a practical question: how does what happens under your hands relate to the comfort, confidence, and movement options your client came for?
✨ We talk about:
• What clients mean by “tight”—and how to ask without leading
• The “potato masher” model, protective guarding, and useful stiffness
• Robert Schleip’s three possibilities: muscle activity, hydration, and practitioner expectancy
• Fascia and pain: what associations can and can’t tell us
• Comparing perceptions and describing differences without alarming clients
• Temporary improvements, movement options, and what makes a change useful
• A session cycle: clarify the experience, try something, recheck, and adapt
✨ And tell us what happened: In one session this week, compare what your client calls “tight,” what your hands notice, and what changes in a movement that matters to them. Where do those observations agree, and where do they differ? Email us — we’d love to hear it.
